Nano tanks are everywhere on social media: a tiny glass box on a desk, one beautiful betta, plants waving in the filter flow, and it looks so easy. It is the reason thousands of people start fishkeeping every year — and also the reason many quit.
Here is the honest version: a 20–30 liter (5–8 gallon) tank is a wonderful project, and it can absolutely be your first aquarium. But "small" does not mean "easy" — in water chemistry, smaller means less forgiving. The margin for error shrinks with every liter.

The Case For a Nano Tank

The pros are real and they matter:
- Space: fits on a desk, shelf or bedside table. No stand, no cabinet, no floor space needed.
- Cost: tank, filter, heater and light for a 20L tank cost a fraction of a big setup.
- Speed: less water to condition, fewer buckets to carry, faster weekly maintenance.
- Focus: a nano tank with one centerpiece fish and a few plants looks deliberate and beautiful — you cannot overcrowd it if you try.
For a betta, a shrimp colony, or a single species, a well-run 20–30L tank is arguably the best home they can have in captivity.
The Case Against: Why Small Tanks Fail
The counterpoint is physics, not opinion. In a 20L tank, one mistake is a crisis:
- Small water volume means toxins concentrate faster. A piece of uneaten food can spike ammonia visibly within a day.
- Temperature swings faster. A room that drops 5 degrees at night drops the tank with it.
- Fish selection is tiny. Most popular fish need more swimming room than a nano tank can offer.
The classic beginner failure: a 20L tank with two goldfish. The goldfish grow, the water turns toxic, and the hobby loses another person. A nano tank is only easy if you respect its limits.
What Can Live in a 20–30L Tank

The good news: the list of happy nano inhabitants is longer than people think.
- Betta fish: the classic choice. One male betta, heated to 26–28°C, is a perfect nano resident.
- Shrimp: cherry shrimp, amano shrimp, and neocaridina color morphs thrive in nanos and help clean.
- Snails: nerite snails and mystery snails are the perfect cleanup crew for a small tank.
- Small nano fish: chili rasboras (Boraras brigittae), pygmy corydoras, ember tetras — but in schools of 6–8, which means they need the 30L end of the range.
- Sole inhabitants: a single honey gourami or a dwarf crayfish can work in 30L with care.
The rule: one species of fish (or fish + shrimp/snails) per nano tank. The temptation to "just add one more" is how nano tanks die.
The Equipment That Makes or Breaks a Nano
Because the water volume is small, equipment quality is amplified. Three pieces matter most:
Filter: a sponge filter is the nano default — it is gentle, quiet, safe for shrimp and fry, and holds a good amount of bacteria for its size. Many betta keepers run a small HOB set to low flow instead; whatever you choose, oversize it.
Heater: a 25–50W heater keeps a 20–30L tank stable. This is non-negotiable for tropical fish — an unheated nano tank swings 4–6°C between day and night in most rooms.
Light: a simple LED strip is enough. You do not need a high-output light for a nano tank — strong light on a small volume of water is how you get the algae bloom of doom.
Plants and Substrate for a Nano Tank
The substrate choice shapes everything downstream. Sand or fine gravel is the easy beginner option — cheap, easy to clean, safe for corydoras and shrimp. Aqua soil is better for plants (it fertilizes and softens water) but messier and harder to clean. For a first nano tank, start with sand or fine gravel and use easy plants that do not need rich soil.
The easy-plant list for nanos is short and bulletproof: java moss (grows on anything, shrimp love it), anubias nana (slow, indestructible, attaches to wood or rock), java fern (same), and a floating plant like frogbit (absorbs nutrients, shades the tank, slows algae).
Resist the starter-kit carpet plants and the "instant aquascape" kits with six species. A nano tank with one moss ball, one anubias and a patch of frogbit looks cleaner, costs less, and stays alive — which is the whole point of the first tank.
Nano Tank Maintenance: Smaller, Not Less
Here is the honest catch: a 20L tank needs the same weekly routine as a 100L tank — water change, glass wipe, test — just with a smaller bucket. Do not be fooled into thinking small equals low-maintenance.
The rhythm for a nano: 20–25% water change weekly, test ammonia/nitrite/nitrate weekly, rinse the sponge monthly in tank water, and watch feeding like a hawk. In a nano tank, "a pinch" of food is already too much.
If you skip a week of maintenance, the nano tank punishes you within days. A large tank absorbs the same neglect for weeks. That is the real personality of nano fishkeeping: consistent, small, and rewarding.
The Verdict: Is a Nano Right for You?
Choose a 20–30L tank if you want a desktop centerpiece, you are happy keeping one species or a shrimp colony, and you can commit to a strict weekly routine. It will teach you more about water chemistry per liter than any other setup — the perfect school for the hobby.
Choose a larger tank (40L+) if you want a community of several species, you prefer less frequent maintenance, or you are not sure you can stay disciplined with feeding. There is no shame in the bigger tank — it is genuinely easier.
And if you do go nano, this combination is the classic that works: one betta, a sponge filter, a heater set to 27°C, a handful of easy plants, and a nerite snail for the glass. Small, beautiful, and — with the right habits — perfectly stable.
Nano Tank Water Chemistry: Small Means Fast
In a 20L tank, every process happens faster than you expect. A forgotten pinch of food produces a measurable ammonia spike within hours, not days. The temperature swings 2–3°C between day and night in most rooms. Even evaporation concentrates minerals noticeably between water changes.
The countermeasure is not magic — it is frequency. Test weekly without exception, change 20–25% of the water on schedule, and never skip the weekly routine just because the tank looks clean. Small tanks look clean right up until the moment they crash.
The upside of this sensitivity: a nano tank teaches you the cause-and-effect of fishkeeping faster than any big tank. You will understand the nitrogen cycle, testing and feeding discipline within the first month — knowledge that transfers directly to any future, larger tank.
The 'I'll Add Just One More' Trap
The most common nano-tank death is not equipment failure — it is accumulation. Each "one more" fish, shrimp or snail adds a little bio-load, and small tanks have almost no buffer. The tank crosses from "fine" to "crisis" between the fifth and sixth additions.
Set a stocking rule on day one and treat it as law: one betta, or six nano fish, or a shrimp colony — pick one and stop. Wait at least two weeks after each addition before even considering another. If the tank is already stocked, the rule is: nothing new for a month.
Shrimp are the pleasant exception to everything: they add almost no bio-load, clean up food scraps, and a colony will naturally control itself. They are the best "one more" you can add to a nano tank — the fish are where you must hold the line.
Lighting, Algae and the Nano Balancing Act
Nano tanks grow algae faster than big tanks because a small volume of water and a modest light produce nutrient spikes easily. The algae-fighting routine: light on 6–7 hours, feeding restrained, weekly changes, and a nerite snail or two on glass-cleaning duty.
If green water or fuzz appears, do not reach for chemicals — first cut the light hours to 5, skip a feeding day, and add floating plants (frogbit, duckweed, water lettuce) that outcompete algae for nutrients. In a nano tank, floating plants are the beginner’s single best algae weapon.
Brown diatom film on the glass in the first weeks is not really algae — it is a normal new-tank stage that passes on its own. Wipe it off, keep the routine, and let the tank settle into balance.
If the algae persists past month two, work through the checklist in order: light hours, feeding amount, water change frequency, then plant growth. In nano tanks, nine times out of ten the answer is too much light or too much food — fix those before buying any "algae treatment" from the store shelf.
Stable routine, one species group, easy plants — that is the whole nano formula. Everything else is decoration.
