
Different Types of Aquarium Filters: Pros and Cons
Sponge, HOB, internal or canister — which filter should a beginner choose? A plain-language comparison of the four main types, with pros, cons and advice.
Walk into any aquarium store and the filter section is a wall of boxes: sponge filters, HOB filters, internal filters, canister filters, undergravel filters, and things that look like they came off a submarine. For a beginner it is overwhelming — and the salesperson wants to sell you the most expensive one.
Here is the truth: every filter does the same core job — providing a surface for the nitrogen-cycle bacteria and moving water. The differences are in size, noise, maintenance, and how well each fits your tank.
Here is the plain-language comparison you need before buying.
Mechanical vs. Biological vs. Chemical Filtration
You will see these three words on every filter box, and they describe the three jobs a filter can do:
- Mechanical: physically trapping debris — the sponge, floss or pad that catches particles. It makes the water clear.
- Biological: the surface area where cycle bacteria live. This is the one that keeps fish alive, not just the water clear.
- Chemical: media like activated carbon that absorb odors, tannins and medicines. Optional, and only needed some of the time.
Every filter on the shelf does mechanical and biological filtration to some degree. Chemical filtration is usually a cartridge you can add or remove. Understand which of the three your filter actually provides, and you will never overpay for "technology" again.
What All Filters Do (And Why Size Matters)
Mechanical filtration traps debris. Chemical filtration (like activated carbon) removes odors and medicines. But biological filtration — surface area for bacteria — is the filter’s real job, and it is why the "rated for tank size" number matters.
The rule: buy a filter rated for at least double your tank volume. A filter rated for 40 liters on a 20-liter tank runs gently and stays cleaner; the same filter on a 60-liter tank is already struggling.
Sponge Filters: The Beginner Champion

A sponge filter is a block of foam attached to an air pump, or sometimes a small water pump. Air rises through the tube, drawing water through the sponge. That is the whole design — and it is brilliant.
Sponge filters are dirt cheap, silent, almost impossible to break, and they hold a massive amount of bacteria on their surface. They are also the safest filter for fry and shrimp, which can be sucked into other filter types.
- Pros: cheap, quiet, unbreakable, shrimp/fry safe, huge biological surface.
- Cons: no real mechanical power for big tanks, air pump needed, slightly cloudy water in planted setups without added flow.
- Best for: tanks up to ~40 liters, shrimp and nano tanks, quarantine tanks, hospital tanks.
HOB (Hang-On-Back) Filters: The Versatile Default
The HOB clamps onto the back rim of the tank and hangs outside, pulling water up through a lift tube and over filter cartridges. It is the classic starter filter that comes with most beginner kits.
HOBs are easy to maintain (the cartridges pop out), provide good surface agitation, and are cheap to replace parts for. The downsides: the cartridge design means the biological bacteria live on a cartridge you are told to replace — replacing it crashes part of your cycle.
- Pros: effective, easy to service, good water surface movement, cheap.
- Cons: can be noisy if the water level drops, cartridges need bacteria-preserving care, evaporates water faster.
- Best for: mid-size community tanks, 20–80 liters, beginner fish tanks with normal bio-load.
Internal Filters: Hidden but Limited
Internal filters sit fully inside the tank, usually in a corner, sucking water through a sponge and sometimes adding a UV light or surface skimmer. They are quiet, invisible, and fine for small tanks.
The trade-off: they take up space inside the tank, and most models have small filter chambers, meaning less room for media than a HOB of the same price.
- Pros: invisible, quiet, some models include surface skimming, easy to hide with plants.
- Cons: uses tank space, limited media capacity, sponge clogs faster in planted tanks.
- Best for: small community tanks, 20–60 liters, clean minimal-looking setups.
Canister Filters: The Powerhouse (and the Pricey One)

A canister filter sits below the tank (usually in a cabinet) and pushes water up into the tank and back through a sealed canister full of media trays. It is the filter of choice for large tanks and planted aquascapes, where flow control and media capacity matter.
Canisters are powerful, quiet, and can hold far more biological media than anything else — some serious aquarists run a canister plus a sponge filter for redundancy. The cost: they are expensive, and cleaning them means disconnecting hoses and lugging the canister to a sink.
- Pros: huge media capacity, adjustable flow, powerful, quiet, professional-grade results.
- Cons: expensive, complex to maintain, hoses and fittings can leak, overkill for small tanks.
- Best for: tanks over 80 liters, planted aquascapes, tanks with messy or large fish.
Undergravel Filters and the Rest
Undergravel filters are a historical footnote — a plate under the gravel that pulls water down through the substrate. They work, but they clog, disturb planted tanks, and modern filters do the job better. Skip them.
The other "extras" you will see — UV sterilizers, protein skimmers (saltwater only), surface skimmers — are additions to a base filter, not replacements. Get the base right first.
Which Filter Should a Beginner Actually Buy?
The honest answer for a first tank: if it is 40 liters or smaller, buy a sponge filter — it is the most forgiving piece of equipment in the hobby, and you can add a second one later. For a 40–100 liter community tank, an HOB rated for 2x your volume is the sweet spot of price, power and ease.
Go bigger than you think you need, always. A filter that is oversized for the tank is never a problem; an undersized one is a constant emergency. And whatever you buy, the most important filter maintenance rule is universal: clean media in tank water, never tap water, and never replace it all at once.
Pick a filter with more capacity than you need, treat it like the bacteria farm it is, and it will keep your water clear and your fish healthy for years.
Flow Rate: The Number Everyone Gets Wrong
Filter boxes advertise a flow rate — "600 L/h!" — and beginners assume bigger is better. The truth is more subtle. The box rate is measured with empty hoses and no media; in real use, most filters move about half their rated flow once media, height and tank water work against them.
The standard recommendation is 4–6 times the tank volume per hour. A 40L tank wants a filter rated around 200–400 L/h. That sounds like a lot, but remember the rating is optimistic — and a little extra flow is never a problem, except for a few species.
The exceptions: bettas, and some shrimp and nano fish, prefer gentle water. If you keep them, choose a filter with an adjustable flow knob, or buy a sponge filter that produces a soft current instead of a river.
Surface Agitation and Why It Matters
The water surface is where gas exchange happens — oxygen enters, carbon dioxide leaves. A filter that barely disturbs the surface leaves fish gasping, even when the filter itself is clean.
You want visible surface movement, not a violent ripple. HOB and canister filters create it naturally with their outflow; sponge filters need an airstone or a small pump to disturb the surface. If your fish hang at the top breathing hard, check surface agitation before you check anything else.
One warning: in planted tanks there is a trade-off. Agitation drives off CO₂ that plants want. A lightly planted beginner tank should still favor surface movement for the fish — plants will be fine with the moderate agitation an HOB provides.
The "One Filter Is Enough" Fallacy
You will hear it in every aquarium shop: "this filter is enough for your tank." It usually is not. The box is rated for a bare tank with no fish; your tank has substrate, plants, fish and daily feeding.
The robust solution used by experienced keepers: run two smaller filters instead of one big one. If one fails, clogs or gets taken offline for maintenance, the other keeps the bacteria alive — and the cycle never crashes. On tanks over 100 liters, a second sponge filter is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy.
The same logic applies to cleaning: never wash all your filter media at once. Clean half this week, half next week, so the bacteria colony always keeps a working majority. Filters are judged by what survives in them, not by what they catch.
Match the filter to your tank, never to your budget — the filter is the heart of the tank, and the tank lives and dies with it.
Whichever type you choose, the maintenance habit is the same: never clean everything at once, and always rinse in tank water.
It also gives you an instant backup filter for a hospital tank or a cycling new tank: just move one sponge over, and the new tank gets a working colony for free.
